Supervision of Supervision

I provide mentorship for post-licensure Marriage and Family Therapists pursuing the AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation. This work focuses on how clinicians step into supervisory authority with clarity, ethical grounding, and sound judgment.

Mentorship is distinct from post-graduate supervision. It is supervision of supervision - an evaluative and formative process that examines how supervisory decisions are made, how responsibility is carried, and how supervision is exercised when reviewing the work of other clinicians.

Who This Supervision Mentorship Is For

This mentorship is a strong fit for post-licensure MFTs who:

  • are pursuing AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation
  • currently provide supervision or are preparing to do so
  • want direct, thoughtful feedback on their supervisory practice
  • are willing to be evaluated, not only supported
  • value structure, clarity, and ethical accountability

I work best with clinicians who are prepared to examine their supervisory stance honestly and to tolerate the responsibility that comes with endorsing others.

Format and Availability

  • Individual supervision mentoring
  • 60-minute virtual meetings
  • Available to licensed marriage and family therapists pursuing the AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation
  • Currently accepting new candidates

I work with eligible candidates throughout the United States when virtual mentorship is permitted under the laws and regulations applicable to both the candidate and mentor.

Structure and Commitment

Mentorship toward the AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation requires a minimum of 36 hours of supervision mentoring completed over at least 18 months, together with the other training requirements established by AAMFT. Meeting frequency is established at the outset and reviewed as the candidate’s training progresses. The mentor and candidate share responsibility for ensuring that the candidate’s clinical work, supervision activities, mentoring hours, and documentation satisfy current AAMFT requirements. The Focus of Supervision Mentorship

Mentorship centers on how supervisors think, decide, and act in their supervisory role. Particular attention is given to:

  • supervisory judgment under conditions of ambiguity and pressure
  • ethical and evaluative responsibility when assessing readiness and competence
  • supervision without defensiveness, avoidance, or over-accommodation
  • clarity of role, boundaries, and expectations
  • cross-cultural, organizational, licensure, professional, and power dynamics affecting supervision
  • congruence between stated supervisory values and enacted practice
  • the candidate’s developing philosophy of supervision and use of self as a supervisor

The emphasis is on how supervision is actually practiced - not how it is ideally described.

Endorsement

Endorsement for the AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation is contingent upon demonstrated supervisory competence, ethical judgment, and readiness. Completion of the minimum training requirements does not guarantee endorsement.

Current Standards

Mentorship is conducted in accordance with the current AAMFT Approved Supervision Designation: Standards Handbook, the AAMFT Code of Ethics, applicable law, and relevant organizational requirements. Candidates should review the current AAMFT requirements before beginning mentorship.
